The MEA Story

On December 4, 1903, the Metal Manufacturers Association (MMA) of Philadelphia was formed by a group of metal trades members looking to promote “open shops” and tackle union activism. Around the same time, the Manufacturers’ Association of Montgomery County (MAMC) was created to unite local businesses against state legislation, particularly concerning textile manufacturing.

Fast forward to the late 1930s, when both groups established employee relations committees to help employers navigate new regulations. In 1960, MMA rebranded as the Manufacturers’ Association of Greater Philadelphia (MAGP) and expanded its territory. Then, in 1971, MAGP merged with MAMC, becoming the Manufacturers’ Association of Delaware Valley (MADV). These two organizations that began over a century ago came together to form what would one day become MEA.

In the 1980s, MADV broadened its services and welcomed membership from service firms, eventually merging with another association. By 1993, recognizing its need for a name that reflected its diverse offerings, MADV became the MidAtlantic Employers’ Association, or MEA.

Today, MEA boasts a knowledgeable team of HR professionals who provide tailored, hands-on support to help various employers address their unique employee relations challenges. Our roots stretch back over a hundred years, but the core of our mission remains the same: ensuring that our clients get the consistent and informed advice and support they need to thrive.
